Projects | ||
NJD has successfully carried out the following projects: (i) Research Study on Human Trafficking leading to the publication of a Research Text (357- pages) titled “International Perspectives and Nigerian Laws on Human Trafficking”. (ii) Research Study on HIV/AIDS, Human Rights and Law leading to the publication of a 198- page Research Text on “HIV/AIDS, Human Rights and Law”. The project was supported by the Edo State HIVAIDS Programme Development Committee and World Bank. The Nigerian Observer Newspapers- an Edo State of Nigeria owned Newspapers) serialized the book in their newspapers for education and information purposes. (iii) Organization of a Seminar on Anti-Human Trafficking in collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, Nigeria and Other Related Matters and the Law Students Association of Benson Idahosa University, Benin City in April 2006. (iv) Organization of Secondary School Based- Peer Education Programs on Human Trafficking in June-July 2006 to raise Peer facilitators who will sensitize and raise awareness on the dangers, antics of traffickers and prevention of trafficking in five Secondary Schools namely: Itohan Girls Secondary School in Ikpoba Okha Local Govt. Area of Edo State, NIFOR Academy in Ovia North East Local Govt. Area of Edo State; Continental Secondary School, Ugbowo, Egor Local Govt. Area of Edo State and Imaguero college, Benin city in Oredo Local Govt Area of Edo State of Nigeria. (v) Organization of Secondary School Based- Peer Education Programs on HIV/AIDS to raise Peer facilitators who will sensitize and raise awareness on the causes and effects of HIV/AIDS, prevention, treatment and control of HIVAIDS and the Human Rights of people living with HIVAIDS in Eight selected Secondary Schools namely: Itohan Girls Secondary School and Niger College in Ikpoba Okha Local Govt. Area of Edo State, NIFOR Academy in Ovia North East Local Govt. Area of Edo State; Continental Secondary School, Uselu Secondary schools and Iyoba College Ugbowo, Egor Local Govt. Area of Edo State. The project was supported by the Edo State HIVAIDS Programme Development Committee and World Bank. (vi) Research Study on Reproductive Health and Rights leading to the publication of a 511-page Research text on Reproductive Health and Rights (Laws and Policies in Nigeria). (vii) Organization of a Workshop on “Effective Strategies To Eliminate Trafficking In Persons” in Benin City in September 2006. The project was supported by the United States Office To Combat and Monitor Trafficking In Persons, Washington DC, USA. (viii) Free legal representation in the Magistrate Court, Benin city, Edo state of Nigeria for a girl subjected to torture and rape. (ix) Free legal services to widows, victims of human trafficking and persons living with HIV/AIDS whose rights have been infringed. (x) Facilitators as Resource Persons in Seminar organized by the Ministry of Youths and Sports, Edo state of Nigeria with the Theme “Be Seen, Be Heard, Youths participate For National Development” held on August 9th. 2007 to celebrate the International (x) Advocacy Campaigns to major stakeholders such as National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and Child Labour, Nigeria, Edo State Committee against Human Trafficking, Nigeria Police, Edo State Command, Immigration department, Customs department, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Print and Electronic media to sensitize them on the imperative for efficiency and in the and collaboration in the fight against human trafficking. (xi) Legal aids, psychological counselling and job placement for victims of human trafficking. (xii) Organization of a Seminar on “Effective Strategies To Combat Human Trafficking”, (an ongoing project 70% completed and to be fully completed in October 2007). The project is supported by the United Nations Office of Commissioner for Human Rights, Geneva, Switzerland (xiii) Library resources to students, practitioners and researchers in the fields of women and children rights. (xiv) Research Study on Reproductive Health and Rights- African Perspectives and Legal Issues in Nigeria” (602 pages. The project was supported by the Centre For Reproductive Rights, New York, U.S.A. (xv) Position Paper and Research Support to the Edo State House of Assembly on the Passing the Child Rights Law and the Law on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. (xvi) Various Press releases in leading Nigerian news papers on issues that will advance the course of democracy in Nigeria. |
